We worked with the New Hanover County Public Defender’s Office to:
- Educate and train criminal legal system stakeholders on how to deal with disparities in jury pools and to generally increase literacy around fair cross-section challenges
- Provide training on identifying fair cross-section issues
- This included hosting 3 webinars, one for all legal system actors on the legal, constitutional, and procedural components of court challenges to jury representativeness; one for defenders focusing on discovery and 6th Amendment jury claims; and a third webinar to provide additional information for defenders on raising constitutional challenges to jury diversity.
- Develop and recommend model practices to ensure representative juries, including community and stakeholder education and training
